This week we look to Exodus chapters 16 and 17. At this point, in the book of Exodus, God has delivered his people from their Egyptian captivity. The three sets of three plagues have been brought upon Egypt. The angel of death came upon Egypt for the 10th and final plague. The Passover occurred, and the people of Israel were commanded to go, given riches and wealth and treasure from the Egyptian people and urged to go on their way. God had redeemed a people for himself.

The Ultimate Man
Part 2: Prophet Jesus
This is not the title I normally use of Jesus. Perhaps I've developed an allergy to the title after hearing many say, "Jesus was a good teacher, a prophet, but not God." I reject that. He is God who became flesh to dwell among us (John 1:14). Still, he is the greatest prophet who ever walked the earth. (6 Minutes/1400 Words)

It is easy to think God shoves His people into the deep end without any training or preparation. He does, after all, use the weak things of the world to put to shame the mighty, the foolish to confound the wise. So we might easily imagine He just takes a brand new novice believer and chucks them into the deep waters of life and ministry opportunity. But, though God loves to take us way outside our comfort zone, He also prepares us for that moment. The disciples of Christ were prepared. The prophets were prepared. David and Moses and Noah were prepared. Privately, God builds up His people before their public work. (7 Minutes/2000 Words)

Moses sent twelve men to spy out the land. God had promised Canaan to Israel, and now it was time to take inventory. Did the inhabitants, a people ripe for God's judgment, live in tents or fortresses? Was the soil fertile? Was it a place Israel could prosper? (2 Minutes/500 Words)

Pat Benatar sang, "love is a battlefield." OK. But I think life is a battlefield. The pressures, the attacks, the deadlines, the struggles: they feel like war. Bullets flying, missiles whirring, and I think I might become a casualty of life. (7/1700 Words)

Overcoming Your Jerichos
(Joshua 5:13-15)
Joshua, the newly minted leader of Israel, was perplexed. Moses always knew what to do, but now he was gone. In recent days, God worked miraculously to bring nomadic Israel into the permanence of the Promised Land, parting the Jordan River's floodwaters so they could enter in. Forty years earlier God had split the Red Sea for their parents and grandparents, and now God showed this new generation his favor. (5 Minutes, 1000 Words)

Make Dead Friends
(Romans 15:4)
While writing to the church about the proper handling of liberties, Paul encouraged his readers to develop a lot of dead friends. What I mean is, he thought the endurance required for the Christian life requires a relationship with the characters of the Old Testament. He saw the pages of his Bible as a limitless source of encouragement for the modern life of faith. (8 Minutes/1600 Words)
