Read God's Will (Zephaniah 1:6)

“…those who have turned back from following the LORD, who do not seek the LORD or inquire of him.” (Zephaniah 1:6)

God looked, during the prophet Zephaniah’s era, for those who would seek and inquire of him, but he found none. Instead, what he saw was a people who sought their hearts, their feelings, and their desires. Rather than wonder what the will of the Lord was, they searched the heavens and the philosophers and gods of their own making. God looked for someone who would seek him, but he found a generation that had largely abandoned him. He was not looking among the unbelieving world but the believing one. Unfortunately, even those who carried his name did not seek his face.

The first and greatest commandment is to love the Lord our God with all our heart, all our mind, and all our soul. He is looking for us to seek him, to inquire of Him, and to consult Him. He has made his word abundant and alive and revelatory for life. We believe the doctrines of the necessity, clarity, and sufficiency of Scripture. His word is necessary because without his word our knowledge of him would be limited to what we can discern of him through creation and conscience. His word is clear, meaning any believer can, with the aid of the Holy Spirit, come to generally correct conclusions about God by reading his word for themselves (see 1 John 2:26-27). His word is sufficient, meaning the Bible does not withhold anything we needed to know about God and His plan — it is all there (see 2 Timothy 3:16-17).

So we ought to seek him. We ought to inquire of him. He has written and spoken. He is leading and will lead. By the blood of Jesus, he is available to all who call upon his name. May he find us seeking and inquiring about his mind and heart. Let read our Bibles!
