Christ Control (Hebrews 2:8)
"At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him." (Hebrews 2:8, ESV).
Did you know that God created humanity to be in control? When in times of chaos and upheaval, it's hard to imagine, but the world was supposed to be in subjection to mankind. God crowned humanity with glory and honor and put everything in subjection under his feet (Psalm 8:5-8). But unfortunately because of the fall, because of sin, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him.
But what we do see, is Jesus. Hebrews goes on to say, "But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone." (Hebrews 2:9, ESV).
You see, Jesus subjected himself to all our brokenness and chaos and agony, especially when he endured those hours of darkness on the cross. During those hours he consumed, within his body, our brokenness and shame and disease and sickness. The very wrath of God was upon him as he died for us almost 2000 years ago.
And one day, when Jesus returns, we will see him in glory and all things will be put in subjection underneath his feet. And in times when creation and our spirits groan, we should look forward in a greater degree to the return of Jesus Christ and the establishment, ultimately, of his Kingdom.
I don't know when he's coming back. I don't know what this season that we're in means for his return. But I do know Jesus is coming again. He will establish his rule and reign forever. On that day he will be known as king -- visibly, practically and experientially -- the supreme Lord over all. Everything -- beautifully, wonderfully, peacefully -- will be in subjection to his rule.
